Home Small Business Tip 2009 02 17

Are you trying to build a home small business on the internet? You do have a website devoted to your business, I hope. If not, you’d better get one soon. A website is by far the best way to promote your home small business on the internet.

To maintain a successful home small business website, you have to keep your visitors coming back again and again. Unless you offer them a reason to return, then chances are they will not. You will need content on your website that not only interests them, but also changes regularly.

Here are 6 quick tips to keep people coming back to your home small business website:

1) Articles: Articles give your visitor something to read. Your customer may have a question, or want more information about the product or service that they received from your home small business. If the articles pertain to your business and the products and services that you offer, then they will be able to access the information. You do not necessarily have to write these articles yourself.

You can post information about your products directly from the package, or the manufacturers website. There are several article directories online that provide good, quality content at no cost to you. It is as simple as visiting the directories, searching for articles that suit your home small business, and then copying them into your website. You are only required to provide a link back to the original authors website.

2) Contests: Who does not want to win something? By offering contests (especially if they change frequently), you give your visitors a reason to return. When the visitor signs up for the contest you may also want to include a link to your newsletter.

The key is to change the contest frequently, whether it be weekly, monthly, or semi-annually. Just remember, the more you change your contest the more times your visitors will come back to your site.

3) Coupons and Discounts: You may want to provide coupons or discounts for your previous clients to entice them to return to your website.

4) Forums- Forums provide something that everyone craves: conversation. If a forum is provided on your site, the visitor will have a reason to visit your website frequently, whether it be to ask a question when help is needed or to keep up on a conversation.

You can host your forum from your site, or choose to use a third party forum, whatever your prefer. Both have their pros and cons, it just comes down to what is best for your business.

5)Blog– Believe It or not, people are interested in what you have to say! A blog will not only allow you to update your clients on your business and life, but it also gives you a great opportunity to add those much needed keywords to your website.

There are quite a few free applications available that make blogging easy.

6)Newsletter- A newsletter is one of the best ways to keep your visitors coming back time and time again.

You will want to include part of a unique article or tip in your newsletter, and then a link to the rest. This will force your viewers to visit your site to get the remainder of the story.

Once again you do not have to write all the content yourself. Using free article directories will cut the time it takes to put a newsletter together in half.

These are just a few ideas to help you develop strategies to keep people coming back to your home small business website. Stay tuned for more home small business tips.

The power of Twitter as a home small business marketing tool

I recently discovered the power of Twitter as a home small business marketing tool. Twitter is a free service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages. People write short updates, often called “tweets” of 140 characters or fewer. These messages are posted to your profile or your blog, sent to your followers, and are searchable on Twitter search.

These tweets can be used to increase exposure to any of your websites, as you are able to include a URL as part of your tweet. And to create a Tweet takes only a few moments. If you make tweeting a part of your daily routine, you have a powerful SEO tool at your disposal.

For example, I download the leads generated by my Veretekk system portals on a daily basis in order to extract the email addresses for uploading into Veremail.

This generates 3 tweets:

Tweet 1:

Downloading my daily list of new leads from my Veretekk system http://brincom.veretekk.com

Tweet 2:

xxxx small home business leads were generated by my Veretekk system yesterday http://brincom.veretekk.com

(where xxxx is the number of leads generated by the system)

Tweet 3:

Uploading the leads into my Veremail system to start the optin process. http://brincom.veremail.com/ Veretekk makes it so easy!

See how easy this is? Now if you post these tweets in your blog, you have another source of ever-changing on-page information that Google just loves! I have seen some of my tweets appear on page 1 of Google for particular keyword phrases within hours of producing a tweet.

The key is to be keyword-specific and to tweet every time you do anything. For example, as I am writing this article I posted a tweet saying “Writing article to promote my home small business site http://homesmallbusiness.whystartandneverquit.com/“. And when I have written and submitted that article, I will post another tweet that says “Article finished! Check it out at http://www.homesmallbusiness.org“.

Home Small Business Tips

So you’ve decided you want to start a home small business? Great! But before you start on this adventure, make sure you keep these important tips in mind.

Starting a successful home small business should be a rewarding experience. And, if you approach it properly and in a businesslike manner, it will be.

There are many important questions to ask yourself when starting a home small business:

- Is this a viable home small business?
- What is the ROI (Return on Investment?
- Does the business have merit?
- Is this something that interests me?

With online businesses in particular, it seems that most people really miss these important considerations when starting that great home small business on Google. They succumb to all the hype about easy riches and “get-rich-quick”, and click the “Submit” button before doing the groundwork to see if the business is really what it claims to be.

On the internet, we call this doing your due diligence. The following are important considerations:

o First, review the policies and procedures of the business. Does this program suit your particular needs? The policies and procedures should be available to you before you decide to join, usually from a link on the home page or sales page. If it is not available or readily apparent, you should reconsider before joining.

o Go to Google and search for this opportunity. Are there many people promoting it? If not, find out why. If this is a ‘startup’ or a ‘prelaunch’ – stay away! You want to spend your time and money on established, proven business models.

o Now search for the business owner’s name in Google. Are they real and reachable, or simply hiding behind a website? If the latter, this could be a warning sign.

o You should also conduct research to see if the company provides tools, training, and customer support by phone. No matter what business you start, you will not have all the skills and tools necessary to be successful from day one, and so you will need guidance, a recommended set of tools, and somewhere to report problems and have them addressed.

o Contact other members of the program and get their opinions. If the program is real and credible, these people should have no problem in speaking with you without trying to recruit you. They should not be pitching you their deal here. You are only looking for valuable information that will assist you in building your home small business.

o Now check some of the more prominent press release services and ezine article services. If the business owner is as good as he or she says he is, then he or she will most assuredly be well schooled in promoting on Google using these systems.

The internet is a great place to work. Using the internet to leverage your time and effort to build a solid and profitable home small business will require thought, work and visualization. All the pieces of this puzzle must fit nicely together. Once you find a good organization where you can spend your valuable time and your hard earned money, you will definitely be in for the ride of your life. Making money online and starting a successful home small business is not complicated. It simply requires the right business plan and working that plan to assure your success.

Once you start your business, especially if you get involved in any sort of MLM opportunity, you will be pressured to purchase leads as a quick way to build a business. Don’t do it! Purchasing leads is not an effective way to build a business. You will waste hours of your valuable time and experience countless hours of frustration as you call and call people who really have little or no interest in you, your deal or your products. It simply does not work unless you are a hot-shot telephone salesperson.
